NEWCASTLE is preparing for the introduction of what is set to become an annual outdoor music festival at the foot of city landmark Nobbys.

Organisers have spent three days setting up stages, marquees and 2.5 kilometres of fencing around Camp Shortland for tomorrow's Fat As Butter festival.

The event has secured big-name artists such as The Dandy Warhols, Regurgitator and the Potbelleez.

It is tipped to bring about 7000 concert-goers to the city.

Authorities and promoters said yesterday that measures had been organised to help keep the crowd safe and controlled.

Community activist Tony Brown is concerned about the sale of alcohol at the event, which will run from 12.30pm to 9.30pm.

Organisers said that Newcastle police and Newcastle City Council had been consulted to ensure the event was regulated properly.

"Trouble won't be tolerated," the organisers' spokesman said.

Council community partnerships manager Melissa Dial said extra security and transport services would operate tomorrow.

Alcohol consumption would be regulated and noise monitored with output levels adjusted, if necessary.
