NEWCASTLE University Students Association will offer an expanded range of services next year as a result of a funding increase.

The University of Newcastle agreed to increase funding for the autonomous student body from $300,000 to $360,000 for 2008 during recent negotiations.

The association was forced to slash staff and services this year after its traditional funding stream was cut following the introduction of voluntary student unionism last year.

Incoming association vice-president Kris Gesling said the extra money would be primarily spent in the area of clubs and societies and student welfare services.

"Our welfare services range from providing free lunches and breakfasts to providing home start-up kits," Mr Gesling said.

"We are always looking for new areas that we can help students," Mr Gesling said.

"We are really glad the university sees the value in what we do."

The association has also recently hired a grievance officer to assist with student complaints.

Vice-chancellor Nick Saunders praised the association for performing well during the first full year of voluntary student unionism.
